Definition: Esoteric

A defender either accidentally (or even deliberately, if he recognises that a "Gambit" possibility exists) makes a clear error, giving declarer a chance to make an unmakeable contract.  However, the declarer, not expecting irrational defense, fails to take advantage of the error and goes down anyway!  The true impact of the Gambit is only manifested on later deals, as the incident preys on the declarer's mind......
